The report of the analytical project GDELT showed that if until October 7, when the militants of Hamas – a radical group recognized as a terrorist in the USA and the countries of the European Union – on the CNN channel itself, reports about Ukraine made up about 8% of all news daily, then their number decreased to less than 1%. At the same time, the focus of attention shifted from information from the belligerent country to discussions about the extent to which the USA, NATO, and Europe are ready to provide military and financial assistance to Ukraine.
Similar data was presented by another Internet analysis company, ComScore, which monitors the discussions of ordinary users of social networks. There, too, after the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the number of posts and discussions related to Ukraine dropped sharply.
According to Paul Kolbe, an employee of the Belfer Center for Science and International Relations, who previously worked for the CIA, such a situation is beneficial to Russian President Vladimir Putin, as it diverts public attention to the problems of the Middle East and allows Russia to continue attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian targets.
“The press is covering events in Ukraine less and less,” Kolbe believes, “and Russia is filling this void with its own campaign of lies and disinformation. Putin’s strategy is to play on the exhaustion of the West’s patience and support, on internal friction in the United States, and to attract those NATO officials who test secret sympathies for Russia”.
CNN mentions that in addition to the actual fighting in Ukraine, Russia is also waging an information war. Its main techniques are to present Ukraine as a divided and corrupt country, as well as a puppet of the USA and NATO, thereby justifying its actions, including against the civilian population.
