From December 11, Russians are obliged to hand in their passports when they are banned from leaving

In Russia, as of today, new rules began to apply, obliging citizens who are prohibited from leaving the country to hand in their foreign passports. This includes conscripts.

According to the government’s decision, the passport must be handed over for safekeeping within five working days to the authorities that issued it (the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) or to state organizations that have restricted their employee’s travel abroad.

The document also prescribes the procedure for submitting a foreign passport to a consular institution abroad, from where it will be sent to Russia by diplomatic post to the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A passport that, without good reason, is not submitted for storage within the specified period, will be considered invalid. Ego can be confiscated at the border.

It is possible to return the passport after lifting the restriction on departure.

According to the law, travel abroad may be prohibited due to criminal prosecution, access to a guest house or bankruptcy.

In accordance with the amendments adopted in June to the law “On the procedure for exiting the Russian Federation and entering the Russian Federation”, the ban on exit now also applies to citizens called up for urgent military or alternative civil service. It is effective from the day the summons for work or study is sent and from the moment it is placed in the Unified Register of Military Accounts. The transfer of the passport is given five days from the moment of the decision on conscription by the relevant commission. It will be possible to get the document back after passing the service.
