The court did not arrest the founder of “Tanuka” in absentia

The Tverskoy District Court of Moscow refused the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia to arrest in absentia Alexander Orlov, the founder of the chain of Japanese cuisine restaurants “Tanuka” and the restaurant holding Bulldozer Group. Orlov is accused of causing property damage by deception. According to this article, he faces up to five years in prison. The restaurateur claimed to be in London, where he opened a new Greek restaurant.
Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs declared Orlov on the international wanted list.
The reason for initiating a criminal case against Orlov could be the rent debts for the premises of the “Merkury Fitness” fitness center belonging to the restaurateur. The injured party, the company “Promtechnokom”, which owns the plazas in Moscow City, filed a claim against Orlov for 110 million rubles. He believes that this is “some misunderstanding” connected with his long absence from Russia.
According to Orlov, he was actually one of the investors of the fitness center in the past, but he had no influence on its operations. Besides, according to the words of the businessman, the legal proceedings on the claim have been going on for the last two years in a civil procedure and there was never any question of criminal responsibility.
In the early 2000s, Alexander Orlov, in partnership with Andrey Isaev, founded the chain of Japanese restaurants “Tanuki”. In 2022, he began selling Russian assets. According to the restaurateur, by now he has completely withdrawn from all projects in Russia and is engaged in business in other countries.
