Danish Ambassador to Russia Jakob Henningsen was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday. The reason was Henningsen’s statement that it is unsafe for Western companies to work in Russia.

In August, Henningsen gave an interview to the Danish publication Borsen, in which he commented on the situation with the Carlsberg brewing company, whose Russian assets were nationalized in the summer by the decree of the country’s president, Vladimir Putin. In an interview, the ambassador advised Danish companies to stop their activities in Russia or to be ready to work “in the conditions of uncertainty.” He warned that, in his opinion, politically motivated demands may be made to any Western business.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia called Henningsen’s statements provocative conjectures that “border on Copenhagen’s interference in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation.” The department stated that “the main damage to the work of foreign companies in Russia, including Danish ones, is the anti-Russian sanctions of the EU and the USA. At the same time, entrepreneurs who have decided to continue their activities in our country enjoy the comprehensive support of the Russian authorities.”

  • The Danish concern Carlsberg Group, which owns the Baltika brewing company in Russia, announced that it will suspend investments in Russia and supplies of imported beer in March 2022 – after the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The company announced that it will sell its Russian assets.
  • In June, the sale of the manufacturer for 200 million euros to an unnamed buyer was announced. The deal was thwarted by the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which introduced external management in “Baltyka”. The head of Carlsberg Jacob Arup-Andersen said that the Russian authorities stole the business.
