At a hearing in the Tversky District Court of Moscow, the prosecutor’s office proposed to Artem Kamardin and Yegor Shtovbe, members of the “Mayakovsky Read”, seven and six years in prison under the general regime, as well as a fine of 500,000 rubles each. This is reported by “Mediazona”.

Kamardin and Shtovba are accused in the case of “inciting hatred” and “calling for anti-state activity” because of the poems they read in Moscow at the Mayakovsky monument in September of last year.

In May of this year, the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow sentenced the poet and rock musician Mykola Daineko to four years in prison in the same criminal case.

The action at the Mayakovsky monument took place on September 25 last year. Young poets read their poems in which they expressed their disagreement with Russia’s policy and military actions in Ukraine. The next day, the apartment where they lived was searched. During the search, they were beaten, one of the poets, according to witnesses, was subjected to sexual violence. On the same day, a video appeared on Telegram channel “112” in which Kamardin, Shtovba and Daineko, standing on their knees, begged for forgiveness for their statements. Bruises are visible on their faces. Then they were detained, on September 28 the court sent them to the SIZO.

This was the first case of criminal prosecution in Russia for not going to the military enlistment office.

  • The Human Rights Center “Memorial” recognized Daineko, Kamardin and Shtovba as political prisoners.
  • Poetry readings at the monument to Vladimir Mayakovsky on Triumphal Square in Moscow were held monthly, usually on the last Sunday of the month, Novaya Gazeta – Europe reports. Young poets read their poems, often dedicated to current events. The audience read rarely consisted of more than 20 people.
