In Russia, in 2023, the number of serious criminals was a record for 12 years

In 2023, a record number of serious and especially serious crimes were committed in Russia over the past 12 years. The “Verstka” publication drew attention to this and analyzed the statistics of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Over the past hour, more than 589,000 such criminals were registered in the country — the last time their number was higher was in 2011.

The largest number of serious and especially serious crimes was committed in Moscow — more than 50 thousand. It is followed by Moscow region (more than 22 thousand), Krasnodar region (more than 2 thousand), Petersburg, Tyumen region and Tatarstan.

The number of serious and particularly serious crimes in the Belgorod region has increased sharply. Compared to 2022, their number increased by 29% and amounted to 5,614 cases.

Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where 213 of them were registered, Chukotka (303) and Chechnya (648) were the most peaceful in relation to identified criminals. For Chechnya, this is the lowest indicator at least since 2010, when statistical observations were started.

Ten subjects of the federation, including Tver, Arkhangelsk, Kaluga, Smolensk and other regions, also showed a decrease in serious crime.

• The category of serious crimes includes intentional crimes, for the commission of which a penalty of no more than 10 years of imprisonment is provided, and serious ones – more than 10. These include murder, robbery, large-scale extortion, a number of criminal articles related to illegal drug trafficking.
