The Meta Corporation, the owner of the social networks Facebook and Instagram, announced on Monday that it is launching a campaign to combat disinformation on the Internet — primarily fakes that are created with the help of artificial intelligence technologies. For this, a special department will be established in Meta.
The company emphasized that fighting high-tech fakes is especially important in light of the European Parliament elections in June. In addition, deepfake technologies can be used in the second elections that will take place within the next year.
Marko Panchyna, Meta’s representative in the European Union stated: “On the eve of the elections, we open the Election Operations Center to monitor possible threats and eliminate them in real time.” They will stand in front of the new team three tasks: fight disinformation, identify and suppress its authors and distributors, and oppose the use of artificial intelligence technologies to create fakes.
Meta’s statement says that the company’s own experts will cooperate with 26 independent European organizations engaged in fact-checking in the field of political technologies at the Center for Election Operations. Work on checking the authenticity of political information on Facebook, Instagram and Threads will be conducted in all languages of the European Union. Special attention will be paid to the search for deepfakes created with the help of generative AI. Meta’s experts include specialists in intelligence, analytics, development, research, content policy, and jurisprudence.
