Armenia has sent an official letter to Russia about the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the Yerevan airport. This was reported by the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, reports Armenpress. According to Armen Grigoryan, the position of the authorities is that Armenian border troops should be on duty at Zvartnots airport.

In turn, the representative of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Russia is not aware of any decisions made regarding the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the Yerevan airport.

“No one has brought this decision to us through official channels,” TASS quoted Peskov as saying.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, spoke about the need to withdraw the border troops of the FSB of Russia from Zvartnots. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia called Simonyan’s words an example of unfriendly behavior. The statement of the Speaker of the Parliament was made against the background of Yerevan’s announcement of a freeze on membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

  • The border management of the FSB of Russia in Armenia includes four detachments – in Gyumri, Armavir, Artashat and Megry, as well as a checkpoint at the Zvartnots airport.
  • Moscow and Yerevan signed an agreement on the status of Russian border troops in Armenia in September 1993. According to the agreement, Yerevan authorized Russia to control Armenia’s border with Turkey and Iran. The maintenance of Russian border guards in Armenia is provided by the governments of both countries.
