Belarusian activist Nikolay Alekseev, killed by FSB officers during detention in Karelia, was buried in Russia on March 16. This is reported by Deutsche Welle with reference to one of Alekseev’s sons. The activist’s body was not released to relatives for a long time.

Alekseev’s son told journalists that the Russian special services had been following his father for about a month. Alekseev lived in Russia for the last few years. According to the activist’s son, his father was accused of “insulting Lukashenko”, he was wanted.

“I spoke with my father literally a few days before his murder. Recently, he was looking for an opportunity to go abroad, because last year Russia and Belarus combined the lists of wanted persons,” Alekseev’s son said.

The murder of the Belarusian became known on March 7. According to the FSB, the activist planned to commit a terrorist attack in Olonets. Allegedly, during the examination of the body, a bomb, a pistol and cartridges were found.

According to the FSB, the murdered man was allegedly a member of the “Kastus Kalinovsky Regiment” and was wanted internationally.

  • Alekseev was 49 years old. Before the beginning of the persecution, he worked together with his wife in a fitness club in Minsk. The murdered man was a civil activist and regularly published calls to support the protest movement in Belarus. Alekseev’s last post on Instagram is a photo with the coat of arms of the Kalynovsky regiment with the caption “Eternal memory. Glory to heroes.”
  • Alekseev’s wife is originally from Russia. She had a residence permit in Belarus, but moved to live with relatives in Karelia. It is not known how and when Alekseev moved to her.
