The government of Georgia denied the country’s president a visit to Lithuania

The government of Georgia rejected the request of the country’s president, Salome Zurabishvili, to allow her a working visit to Vilnius.
The notice was posted on April 4 on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers. The reason for the decision is not mentioned in it.
Zurabishvili is planning a working visit to Vilnius on April 10-12. The president has not yet announced whether she intends to go to Lithuania in defiance of the ban, the “Echo of the Caucasus” website notes.
At the same time, “Interfax” quotes the words of the general secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, the mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, in a conversation with journalists. Kaladze said that Zurabishvili’s actions hinder the country’s development. He also noted that Zurabishvili is gathering around himself radical opposition forces that are “open enemies of the country”.
The current decision of the Georgian ministers is another sign of growing hostility between politicians from the ruling party and the head of state. In the autumn of last year, when Zurabishvila’s popularity in Georgia was growing because of her decidedly pro-Western and pro-Ukrainian views, the Georgian Dream party initiated her impeachment. The president was accused of violating the Constitution for visiting a number of foreign countries in 2023 without Cabinet approval.
As a result, this request for impeachment failed. “Georgian Dream” could not get enough support from other deputies. In an interview with Radio Liberty, the head of state accused the party of trying to “kill democracy and the European future of Georgia.”
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Georgian authorities continue the course of rapprochement with the West, while at the same time trying not to quarrel with Moscow. The “Georgian Dream” government, which is more pro-Russian, condemned Moscow for the invasion, but refused to impose its own sanctions against Russia.
