A mass grave was discovered during construction in Dagestan

In Dagestan, near Makhachkala, a mass grave was discovered during construction work. There are 18 skeletons in the mass grave, many of them have holes in their skulls. According to the investigation department of the SKR in Dagestan, the burial may be related to the years of Stalinist repressions.

The press secretary of the Investigative Committee for Dagestan, Oksana Tenetova, told Kavkaz.Realii that the committee was conducting an investigation. She confirmed that the remains may date back to the 1930s of the last century. Law enforcement officers are working at the scene. More detailed comments have not yet followed.

Nameless burials of victims of Stalinist repressions on the territory of Russia and the former USSR are still being found. For example, at the end of 2022, the Museum of History of Yekaterinburg published the preliminary results of the research on the mass grave on the Moskovsky tract near the city. There lie the remains of about two thousand executed in the 1930s.

Yury Dmitriev, a historian from Petrozavodsk, head of the Karelian “Memorial”, was engaged in researching the mass graves buried in the Sandarmoh tract of Karelia. About 150 grave pits were found there, which could contain the remains of about 4.5 thousand people.

In 2021, the court sentenced Dmitriev to 15 years in prison on charges of making child pornography, lewd acts, and possession of weapons. He was previously acquitted of all these articles. Human rights organizations and supporters of the historian call his persecution political.
