A bas-relief of the dictator Joseph Stalin will be placed on the facade of the Volgograd State Medical University. The university’s administration explained it as the restoration of historical memory.
“We are talking about the restoration of the historical building of the architectural monument – giving it its original shape. The bas-relief of Stalin is part of the artistic plan of architects Levitan and Simbirtsev, realized in 1953, as well as the inscription “Stalin” on the open books of the capitals of the columns, – explained Dmitry Trofimov, press secretary of the university, in a conversation with the RIA Novosti agency.
According to Trofimov, initially on the facade of the building, which is located in the very center of Volgograd, “there were four bas-reliefs – Marx, Engels, Lenin and Stalin, but during the years of debunking the personality cult, the image of the latter was removed.”
The restoration project with the return of Stalin’s bas-relief and a commemorative plaque dedicated to him was proposed in 2019 by architect Sergey Senoi. Now the city authorities have officially approved it.
Earlier, two monuments to Stalin were opened in Volgograd – at the panorama museum “Battle of Stalingrad” and on the territory of the regional committee of the CPRF party.
