A bill to ban abortions in private clinics throughout the country has been submitted to the State Duma of Russia. This is an initiative of deputies of the Nizhny Novgorod Legislative Assembly. According to the opinion of the deputies, reflected in the explanatory note, such a measure will help to increase the birth rate. The document is published on the website of the State Duma.
The authors of the bill talk about the irresponsibility of the young generation, which postpones the birth of children “until they get an education, a profession, before acquiring material goods”, and also criticize the conditions of operations in private clinics.
“The “week of silence” is not observed in medical organizations of the private health care system, women are not counseled by psychologists, lawyers, and information about social support measures is not provided,” the deputies said.
As reported by Idel. In reality, earlier residents of Nizhny Novgorod announced a collection of signatures under an open letter to the governor of the region, Gleb Nikitin, who initiated the bill, with the demand that the abortion procedure will not be tightened.
Initially, Nikitin also proposed to shorten the permissible term for termination of pregnancy from 12 to 8 weeks, but this idea was rejected.
- Ideas to limit the possibility of termination of pregnancy have been discussed a lot by regional and federal authorities in recent months. Recently, fines for propensity to abortion were introduced in Mordovia and Tver region. Private clinics in Tatarstan, Kursk and Chelyabinsk regions and annexed Crimea have already refused to perform abortions. In some regions, fines were introduced for “inclination to abortion”.
- Experts in the field of medicine and demography argue that restricting the availability of abortions will not lead to an increase in the birth rate, but may lead to an increase in the number of clandestine abortions, female mortality and infanticide. According to them, in order to increase the birth rate, it is necessary to increase the state’s support for families with children and improve the standard of living.
