On the Baikal-Amur Railway (its western part is organizationally part of the East-Siberian Railway), a fire broke out in the Severomuisky tunnel on the territory of Buryatia on the night of November 30. This is reported by the Russian mass media with reference to the Russian Railways and the Transport Prosecutor’s Office.
“According to preliminary information, on November 29, on the Itikit – Okusykan race, a car caught fire as part of a freight train while driving through the Severomysky tunnel,” the message says. According to reports, there are no victims, traffic in the tunnel is closed.
According to Baza, the train contained 41 tanks with fuel, 3 tanks with aviation fuel and 6 wagons with ferrous metal. Apparently, the cistern caught fire. It is still unknown what caused the fire. “Baza” writes that one of the versions is a short circuit that led to the fire of the cable network, after which the fire spread to the tank.
Ukrainian mass media, with reference to sources in the Security Service of Ukraine, claim that four explosions occurred in the Severomui tunnel. It is confirmed that it was about the operation of the Ukrainian special services. Officially, the SBU did not comment on the incident. Other sources do not report explosions.
Severomuisky tunnel has a length of about 15 kilometers, it is the longest on BAM. There is an alternative railway route, the so-called Severomuy bypass, but its capacity is less. Delays of at least ten freight trains are reported.
Recently, BAM has been working on the expansion of this highway, which is a “backup” of the Transsib and is used, among other things, for the transportation of goods from China. A second road is being laid, electrification works are underway. Prisoners are also involved in the construction.
