A court in Moscow arrested politician Dmitry Gudkov in absentia on charges of spreading fakes about the Russian army, Kommersant reports.

Gudkov himself reported on the initiation of the case in October 2023, and laid out the court’s decision. The reason was the video “What did Putin’s war in Ukraine lead to?”, published on the Politika channel in April 2022.

According to the investigation, the video contains “false information about the mass murders of civilians in Buch, Irpen, and Borodyanka.” The Russian military is accused of attacks on the civilian population and other war crimes in these cities.

In December 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia declared Hudkov wanted. Earlier, in February 2023, the Russian authorities declared him a foreign agent. According to the alleged Hudkov article, he faces up to 15 years of imprisonment.

  • Dmitry Gudkov was a member of the State Duma from 2011 to 2016. He ran for the “Just Russia” party, but was expelled from it in 2013. In 2021, Gudkov left Russia. Hudkov sharply condemned the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and joined the Anti-War Committee of Russia.
  • According to “OVD-Info” estimates, cases for the anti-military position in Russia have been opened against at least 851 people, including against at least 250 – for the article about fakes about the Russian army. Russian courts recognize reports about the war in Ukraine that do not coincide with the version of the Ministry of Defense of Russia as fakes.
