The court in Izhevsk fined local resident Konstantin Mytin 30,000 rubles for damaging the Z symbol.
According to the verdict, on the night of February 24, 2023 – the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine – Mytin threw a can of red paint at the symbol Z on the facade of the theater. The court called Z a “popular” or “accepted” symbol of the war in Ukraine.
Thus, the court considered, Mytin “tried to express a protest and a negative attitude” to the invasion of the territory of a neighboring country. The court accused him of discrediting the Russian army. Mytin fully admitted his guilt.
- In May 2022, the Ministry of Defense of Russia reported that the letters Z and V are not recognized as official military symbols and do not carry a special burden. Earlier, the Krasnodar resident was fined 30,000 rubles for spitting on Z.
- In Russia, Z is considered an unofficial symbol of military aggression against Ukraine. Ego is applied to Russian equipment, which is involved in the invasion of Ukraine. The symbol was repeatedly used at actions in support of the war, including with the participation of children. The letter Z was painted on the doors of the apartments of those who oppose the war in Ukraine. Z was even placed on a chicken fillet.
