In the Atlantic Ocean, on Monday, a private submarine that was taking tourists to the wreckage of the sunken ship “Titanic” stopped communicating. The maritime authorities of the USA and Canada, in whose territorial waters the incident occurred, and the owner of the submarine – the company Oceangate Expeditions – launched a search operation. It is not specified whether there were tourists on board and how many.
The mini-submarine “Titan” is used for private excursions. It accommodates five people: the captain, a scientist-guide and three tourists. Usually, expeditions last eight days, including the journey to the site of the disaster on the ship and back. Having reached the site of the wreck of the “Titanic”, the passengers transfer to the submarine and inspect the sunken liner. The immersion itself lasts about eight hours. The cost of the tour is up to 250 thousand dollars.
According to Oceangate Expeditions, the submarine has a life support system on board, which in case of an accident can support life inside the device for 96 hours.
“Titanic” lies at the bottom of the Atlantic approximately 600 kilometers from the Canadian island of Newfoundland at a depth of 3800 meters.
- The transatlantic liner “Titanic” – the largest and most luxurious passenger ship of its time – suffered a disaster during a flight from Southampton to New York in 1912, colliding with an iceberg. There were 2,200 passengers and crew members on board the Titanic. More than 1,500 of them died. The wreckage of the ship was discovered in 1985. Since then, they are actively explored, and also attract tourists.
