A year of full-scale war: the Russian Federation caused $144 billion in damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure

As of February 2023, the amount of damage caused to the infrastructure of Ukraine due to the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation increased by another 6 billion dollars and amounts to 143.8 billion dollars.
This is stated in assessment KSE Institute within the framework of the “Russia will pay” project.
The largest amount of damage is from the destruction of the housing stock. It amounts to 53.6 billion dollars. In total, more than 150,000 residential buildings were damaged or destroyed.
In second place in terms of the amount of damage caused is the sphere of infrastructure. According to the results of the year of the full-scale war, losses in this area are estimated at 36.2 billion dollars.
More than 25,000 kilometers of state and local roads and 344 bridges and overpasses were destroyed or damaged.
The damage and destruction of educational institutions continues – there are currently 3,170 of them. Among them, almost 1,500 are secondary education institutions, 909 – pre-school, and 528 – higher. As of the end of February 2023, losses in the field of education increased by 300 million dollars compared to December calculations – up to 8.9 billion dollars.
Damages caused to Ukraine’s energy sector also increased, amounting to $8.1 billion. The increase in the assessment of losses took place in relation to the previously caused damage to nuclear energy, as well as in connection with the update of calculations on damage to natural gas transportation facilities.
In the new calculations, the amount of damage caused to the forests of Ukraine was added for the first time, which, according to the results of the first year of the full-scale war, amounts to 4.5 billion dollars.
The amount of direct losses caused to the agro-industrial complex and land resources increased by another 2.1 billion dollars. Currently, the estimate of losses in this area is 8.7 billion dollars.
By the end of February 2023, the number of damaged and destroyed vehicles also increased significantly. Compared to the calculations for the end of 2022, the number of such cars increased by 28.5 thousand. In total, 223,400 cars worth 3.1 billion dollars were destroyed or damaged as a result of the war.
Direct expenses of trade and health care also increased – up to 2.6 billion dollars and 1.8 billion dollars, respectively.
At the same time, in the latest calculations, experts of the KSE “Russia will pay” project reduced the estimate of losses to industry and enterprises from 13 billion dollars to 11.3 billion dollars due to reassessment of the status of enterprises after receiving updated information about the results of damage to assets after shelling.
