About 140 Russian citizens in Sudan have applied to diplomatic missions with a request for evacuation. Now most of them are in the Russian embassy in Khartoum. A woman with a child is blocked in the building of the Nubian Metropolis, she cannot leave because of shelling.
Ambassador of Russia in Khartoum, Vyacheslav Chernoval, said that there are about 300 Russian citizens on consular records in Sudan. He specified that, in addition to Russians, citizens of other CIS countries also apply to the embassy with a request for evacuation.
According to Chernovol, street fighting continues in Khartoum, so it is difficult to get outside the territory of the embassy, which prevents evacuation.
A Russian woman with a child, whose name has not been released, told the state media that she came to the metropolis for Easter. Because of the shelling, she has not been able to go outside the building for almost a week.
The Nubian Metropolis is the diocese of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church in Khartoum. There is the only Orthodox cathedral in Sudan. The territory of the diocese is surrounded by a high wall.
Vyacheslav Chernoval reported that until April 30, there is a no-fly regime over Sudan. The ambassador hopes that exceptions will be made for evacuation flights. However, he noted, this is out of the question yet, as Khartoum airport is in the war zone.
