A roundup of migrants took place in the center of St. Petersburg on New Year’s Eve. According to the publication “Fontanka”, about three thousand people were taken to the police department. About 600 of them were found to be in violation of the migration legislation after checking their documents. More hundreds may be deported from the country.
The center of St. Petersburg was closed to mass revelers on New Year’s Eve and night. Festive events in the city were canceled as a sign of solidarity with the victims of the shelling of Belgorod on December 31, when 25 people died.
The publication Sota reported on a similar raid in Moscow. The number of detainees is not specified. Red Square in the capital was closed to visitors on the night of January 1.
In Chelyabinsk, a criminal case was initiated against a group of migrants who, according to the Investigative Committee, attacked the participants of the “special military operation” – that is how the war in Ukraine is officially called in Russian documents. As reported by law enforcement agencies, migrants, the number of which is not specified, on New Year’s Eve had a fight with two servicemen demobilized from the front line.
