Activists helped 395 trans people change their gender marker

Before the ban on transgender transition in Russia, 395 transpersons managed to pass the medical commission and receive certificates for changing the gender marker. Activists helped them. Mediazona told about the story.

Queer Svit, a non-binary initiative of SNeH, a project to help queer and non-white people, a group of independent activists and the founder of “Support Service” Ilya Krasylshchik, collected 12 million rubles in a few months and established contact with two clinics to help people with gender dysphoria.

On words Krasylshchika, it all started with his tweet, which readers considered transphobic. Anna-Maria Tesfaye, the founder of Queer Svit, invited Krasylshchik to speak at the wave of discussions. During a meeting with her and activist Anna Eroshenko in Berlin, Krasylshchik heard a “super clear pitch”: “If you’re a transperson, you’re fucked in the Russian Federation.”

The activists had a list of 400 transpersons who needed help in passing the medical board. Tesfaye and Eroshenko said that one commission costs about 25 thousand rubles, and it is possible to pass it only in two Moscow clinics.

Krasylshchik is engaged in fundraising – the total amount, including the cost of medical commissions, tickets and accommodation, seemed to him to be high. In a few weeks, he collected the necessary funds.

After that, Queer Svit and SNeH organized the rest of the assistance process: agreed with clinics and distributed information in closed LGBT+ chats. According to the initiators, it was necessary to act secretly.

As a result, the activists managed to help almost everyone. In July 2023, a law prohibiting transgender transition came into force in Russia. The authorities have banned hormone therapy and surgical operations for transgender people, as well as changing the gender marker. Human rights activists believe that the ban will lead to an increase in the number of mental disorders and suicides, as well as to the emergence of a market for underground medical services.
