According to de Croo, in March Belgium already decided to send part of the interest from the tax on frozen assets to support Ukraine, but the country’s government would like to use all the interest received for this purpose.

“We want to play a leading role in this. The use of this money for Ukraine’s military efforts and for its reconstruction is justified from both an economic and a moral point of view,” said De Croo, writes the Brussels Times.

Income from Russian assets

He clarified that it is about 197 million euros of income from Russian assets.

“We use this money only to support Ukraine and to help Ukrainian refugees. But I am sure that we must go further — not only by freezing interest on Russian assets, but also by confiscating them,” he said.

De Croo announced his intention to develop a mechanism for the confiscation of proceeds from frozen Russian assets in order to direct them to help Ukraine.

Let’s remind

The “Ministry of Finance” wrote that the government of Belgium reported that the country received an additional 625 million euros in 2022 as a result of taxation of income from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation for 250 billion euros.
