This week, the German automaker BMW announced that the eighth generation of the 5-series sedan will have an electric version of the i5, as well as an updated gasoline equivalent. This is reported by The Verge.

As in the case of the 4 Series and 7 Series, the company is creating an electric version on the same platform as the gasoline versions. At the same time, in electric cars, the company does not abandon useless branded large radiator grilles.
Complete sets
The electric 5 series is available in two configurations:
- i5 eDrive40 with rear-wheel drive, with a capacity of 335 horsepower, which allows the car to accelerate to 60 miles per hour (96.6 km/h) in 6 seconds.;
- sports i5 M60 xDrive with all-wheel drive with a capacity of 601 hp. and acceleration to 60 miles per hour (96.6 km/h) in 3.8 seconds.
In both cases, the maximum speed is electronically limited to 120 miles per hour (193.1 km/h).
Accumulator battery
The battery with a capacity of 81.2 kWh will allow the i5 to travel up to 516 km without recharging (measurement based on the WLTP standard). Fast charging with a capacity of up to 205 kW is supported, allowing you to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
New functions
Electric versions of the 5 Series will be among the first to feature BMW’s new hands-free highway driving functions. The car can also offer to change the lane, and as a confirmation of the driver’s maneuver, it will be enough to look in the outside mirror.
At the same time, BMW has reworked its infotainment system and for the first time included car games in it. A number of games are available when the car is parked, which helps to save time, for example, while charging. The function of viewing streaming video is also available in parked cars.
Price
The price of the BMW i5 eDrive40 starts at $67,795, while the price of the more powerful i5 M60 xDrive model starts at $85,095.
