British Channel 4 will show a film about Dmitry Muratov

On Monday, the British Channel 4 will show the documentary “The Price of Truth”, dedicated to the editor-in-chief of “Novaya Gazeta”, banned by the Russian authorities, Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov.

“This is a story of courage, determination and simple refusal to surrender to Vladimir Putin, no matter what the cost,” describe the film’s creators. The director was Patrick Forbes.

The film tells the story of the last year and a half, since Muratov won the Nobel Peace Prize at the end of 2021. Among the main events described in it are the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the evacuation of about 40 employees of “Novaya Gazeta” to Latvia and the beginning of the publication of “Novaya Gazeta. Evropa”, the attack on Muratov on the Moscow-Samara train, the brutal beating of the publication’s journalist Elena Milashinoy in Grozny.

In an interview with The Guardian, Muratov told why he stayed in Russia, despite the authorities’ repression of the independent press and opponents of the invasion of Ukraine. According to him, he has a contract with the newspaper, which continues to operate; moreover, his mother is seriously ill. The Guardian’s correspondent suggests that there is a third reason – the presence of Muratov in Moscow should show that there is also an “alternative Russia”, more open to peace, which, according to the author, was fought for by Mikhail Gorbachev, who played a major role in the fate of Muratov and the “New newspapers”.

Muratov also says that he does not lose hope for changes for the better, associating them with civil society, a community of people, and not the state.
