ChatGPT has resumed work in Italy

The ChatGPT chatbot became available in Italy after its developer, the American company OpenAI, agreed to the requirements of the Italian National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data to bring the bot’s work into line with EU legislation on the protection of personal data, Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper writes.

Last week, OpenAI gave all users the option to prevent ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence training algorithm from processing their conversations.

However, the regulator has other requirements that OpenAI has not yet fulfilled, the newspaper notes. In particular, the Italian authorities require that interested parties, including those who are not users of ChatGPT, request the correction or, if this is technically impossible, the deletion of their personal data that was incorrectly generated by the bot.

In addition, OpenAI should provide interested parties who are not recognized as users with the ability to prohibit the bot from using their data in a simple way.

Users of the bot should have the same opportunity if they provide legal grounds for doing so. OpenAI should also conduct an information campaign aimed at everyone, not just ChatGPT users, that will tell you how to delete your data from the bot.

In addition, the Italian authorities require the creators of ChatGPT to request the age of users during registration, and by the end of September to develop a verification system that will deny access to the bot to persons under the age of 13.

Let’s remind

At the end of March, the Italian authorities were the first in the world to ban access to the ChatGPT chatbot. A statement about this was published by the National Office for the Protection of Personal Data. The agency also launched an investigation into a possible breach of personal data security by an American company.

The reason for this was a leak that OpenAI reported in March. The company said it was forced to temporarily disable ChatGPT due to “an error in the operation of the open source library” that allowed some users to see the messages of other people who communicated with the chatbot.

ChatGPT is a multitasking chatbot based on a neural network, capable of answering almost any user question and writing text on demand. Google presented its competitor ChatGPT on February 6. The Bard service works on the neural network of the LaMBDA company.
