Vladyslav Kanyus, a resident of Kemerovo, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison on charges of murder with special cruelty, did not serve a year in prison: he was released because he agreed to take part in the war with Ukraine, the “Dozhd” TV channel reports with reference to human rights activist Alyona Popova and relatives crime victims
In January 2020, Kanyus killed 23-year-old Vera Pekhteleva, with whom he was previously in a relationship, when she came to his apartment to collect things. The forensic medical examination found more than 50 signs of injury on the girl’s body, including broken bones, cut wounds, strangulation marks and bruises. At the same time, Kanyus’ neighbors, hearing him beating the victim, called the police seven times, but no one came to the call.
In July of last year, the court sentenced Kanyus to 17 years in a high-security prison, however, Pekhteleva’s mother recently saw a photo of him on social networks in military uniform and with a weapon in his hands as part of a combat group on the territory of Ukraine. After that, the family of the victim appealed to the FSIN. It was reported there that on April 28, 2023, the convicted person “disappeared into the custody of the Federal Criminal Police Service of the Rostov region.” The department did not respond to further requests from Pekhteleva’s relatives about the whereabouts of Kanyus.
Human rights activist Alyona Popova suggests that if Kanyus survives the war, he will be pardoned. Pekhteleva’s relatives fear that he will try to take revenge on them.
