The eastern countries of the European Union asked the bloc for support measures due to the surplus of grain from Ukraine, which is crowding out local producers.

A group of six Eastern European countries, in particular Poland, is asking for measures to reduce the excess supply of grain, because Ukrainian grain competes with producers in the markets of neighboring countries, and thus reduces the demand for local products.
The countries are asking for compensation for their farmers and for the introduction of isolated transit routes so that Ukrainian grain and other products can immediately reach third countries and not cause disruptions in the EU.
“I informed the ministers about the problems faced by farmers in neighboring countries with the import of Ukrainian grain, which was supposed to be sent to Western Europe and Africa,” said Minister of Agriculture of Poland Henryk Kowalczyk. “Part of the grain remains in neighboring countries, which causes problems for local farmers who cannot sell their own grain.”
The export of corn from Ukraine to Poland from January to November last year increased to 1.6 million tons, which is more than 25,000% more than in the corresponding period of 2021, the document from the meeting states. Exports to Hungary jumped to more than 900 thousand tons from 5 thousand tons, and to Bulgaria – to 16.7 thousand tons from 361 tons.
“We are ready to continue helping Ukraine, there is no turning back,” Kovalchyk said. “But we want the whole EU to be involved in solving this problem.”
