Activists of environmental organizations from several regions of Russia demanded that the authorities justify the increase in the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of harmful substances in the air. This is reported by “Kedr”.
Eco-activists discovered that the norms were increased by the decree of the Chief Sanitary Doctor of Russia from January 2021. Thus, “safe” daily concentrations of ammonia and nitrogen dioxide increased by 2.5 times, and hydrogen fluoride – by 2.8 times. In addition, the “norm” of the content of fine particles in the air remained at a level 2.3 times higher than the WHO recommendation.
The eco-activists sent a letter about this to the heads of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Health and Rosprirodnazor, the chief sanitary doctor and members of the State Duma from the relevant committees. Organizations from the Samara, Sverdlovsk, Omsk and Chelyabinsk regions, from the Republic of Bashkortostan and Moscow, as well as the interregional union “For chemical safety” signed the petition.
Eco-activists demanded that the authorities explain what studies have confirmed the safety of the new MPC values, and make the rationale publicly available.
According to the report of the international air quality control company IQAir, in 2022 Russia ranked 86th in the world in terms of air pollution. According to the organization, the dirtiest air in Russia is in Krasnoyarsk, and the cleanest is in Vladivostok.
