Electricity shortage: on Wednesday, Ukraine again requested emergency aid from Europe

Despite the drop in temperature, on Wednesday evening maximum consumption decreased by only 3% over the summer record, so Ukraine used emergency assistance from the European energy system in the evening.

Temperatures dropped by 4℃ on Wednesday, but even so, the evening maximum consumption was only 3% below the summer record on August 21.
In order to cover the demand, Ukrenergo applied emergency assistance from the power system of Poland and Romania in the amount of 1800 MWh from 18:00 to 22:00. Emergency assistance is not a commercial import, but is the last and most expensive emergency response measure to balance the power system, which does not require disconnection of consumers.
The reason was a shortage of electricity in the power system due to a large amount of damage at thermal and hydroelectric power stations. In addition, an active repair campaign continues at nuclear power plants, which are preparing to operate at maximum capacity in winter.
Currently, the volume of imports from Europe, which is formed within the framework of the functioning of the electricity market, is not enough to cover the difference between increased consumption and limited generation opportunities.
On Thursday, Ukraine imported almost no electricity: the maximum capacity of supplies from Slovakia in the evening hours is 30 MW. There is no export.
Also, the occupiers continue to shell the energy infrastructure. As of Thursday morning, 412 settlements were cut off due to hostilities and other reasons. There is new damage to networks in Donetsk region, Kherson region and Zaporizhzhia. The restoration of power takes place under a security situation and with the permission of the military.
As for repairs, part of the equipment at the substation in the southern region has already been restored. This increased the reliability of transmission of electricity by trunk networks in several areas at once. Work continues to fully restore the functionality of substations.
