Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashyna, who was beaten in Chechnya, was discharged from the hospital. This was reported by the former editor-in-chief of the Echo of Moscow radio station Aleksey Venediktov.

Milashyna and lawyer Alexander Nemov were attacked in Grozny on July 4, when they flew to the announcement of the sentence of Zarema Musaeva, the mother of the Chechen activists Yangulbayev. The journalist and the lawyer were beaten, including kicked in the face, equipment and documents were destroyed. Milashyna believes that the attack is directly related to their professional activities in Chechnya.

In addition to other injuries, Nemov received a knife wound. Milashina was diagnosed with a closed craniocerebral injury, about 14 hand fractures and multiple soft tissue injuries.

On the fact of the attack, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case – under the articles of causing harm to health of light and medium severity.

  • Elena Milashyna writes about human rights issues in Chechnya – and, according to her, will continue to do so even after the attack. In January 2022, the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, called Milashyna a “terrorist” and called for her arrest. Kadyrov’s closest ally, State Duma deputy Adam Delymkhanov, also threatened the journalist. After that, Milashyna left Russia.
  • Earlier, Milashyna was already attacked because of her journalistic activities: in 2006 – in Beslan, in 2022 – in Grozny. She was also repeatedly threatened with murder.
