An investigator from Chechnya interrogated Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashyna, who was attacked in Grozny in early July. This was reported by the “Team Against Torture”.

Milashyna told the investigator that the attackers threatened to kill her if she returned to Chechnya. “We already beat you, you didn’t understand, this is the second warning, there won’t be a third,” – the journalist repeated their words.

Milashyna fears for her life if she has to participate in investigative actions in Chechnya. The “Team Against Torture” filed a petition for state protection.

  • The attack on journalist Elena Milashyna and lawyer Alexander Nemov happened on the morning of Tuesday, July 4, when they arrived in Grozny on a business trip. The taxi in which Milashyna and Nemov were traveling from the airport to the city center was stopped by unknown persons. They forcibly put the journalist and the lawyer in one of their cars, drove them to a nearby ravine, where they began to severely beat her. Nemova was stabbed in the leg, and Milashina was specially beaten on the fingers, the thunderbolt would amputate them.
  • Milashyna and Nemov noted that criminals were only interested in equipment and official documents. They were not interested in other material values. The journalist is sure that the attack on her and lawyer Nemov is directly related to their professional activities on the territory of Chechnya.
  • Elena Milashyna and Alexander Nemov flew to Chechnya for the sentencing of Zarema Musaeva, the mother of Chechen activists and critics of Ramzan Kadyrov, the Yangulbayev brothers, and the wife of judge Sayda Yangulbayev (they are all outside Russia).
