The Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia opened criminal cases against four producers of chicken eggs in the Kirov region and in the annexed Crimea. The reason was a sharp increase by the companies in the sale prices for their products. Since the companies raised prices at the same time, FAS suspects them of cartel collusion.
As TASS clarifies with reference to the department’s press service, two companies in the annexed Crimea – “Patriot” and “SP Oktyabrskoye” – simultaneously raised the prices of different categories of eggs, and the price increase reached 94 percent. “Soviet Agrofirma” and “Vyatsko-Polyanskaya Poultry Farm” in the Kirov region allowed a 60 percent increase in prices. The FAS will check how well-founded the companies’ decisions were to increase vacation prices.
In recent months, there has been an increase in product prices in Russia. Chicken eggs traveled the most. According to Rosstat, in November eggs traveled by 15.1 percent, since the beginning of the year – by 35.5 percent, in annual terms – by 40.3 percent. There are reports from Russian cities about queues for relatively cheap eggs, as well as the fact that some stores have limited their availability to one hand. As “Izvestia” notes, in some regions, retail chains have begun to sell eggs individually.
On December 13, the Government of Russia approved zeroing of import duties on chicken eggs from January 1 to June 30, 2024. At the moment, the duty is 15 percent of the production cost. The Ministry of Agriculture reported on negotiations with the so-called friendly countries – primarily Azerbaijan and Turkey – on increasing the import of eggs to Russia.
The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, announced on December 14 at the final press conference that the high cost of chicken eggs in the country is due to an increase in demand against the background of rising incomes of the population. According to him, the demand exceeded the supply, and the authorities did not have time to take care of the increase in the import of eggs.
