The USA and Finland are preparing a bilateral agreement on defense cooperation. This document, in particular, will allow the USA to place its military bases on the territory of Finland. The treaty will not cover nuclear weapons.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland Mikael Antell said that the text of the agreement is almost ready. It was revised once. Antella’s words are quoted by Helsingin Sanomat newspaper. In his opinion, the presence of the United States will strengthen the deterrence and defense potential of Finland. The agreement will allow American troops to stay in Finland, carry out preliminary storage of materials and possible investment in infrastructure at the expense of funds provided by the US Congress to the Pentagon.
Negotiations between Finland and the USA at the official level will continue until next year, after which the draft agreement will be considered by the parliament.
The agreement does not contradict Finland’s membership in NATO, but complements it.
Now the USA is conducting similar negotiations on defense cooperation with Sweden and Denmark. The United States concluded a similar agreement with Norway in 2021. The American Air Force is stationed at the base of the Norwegian airport Rygge.
- On April 4, Finland officially became the 31st member of NATO. Along with it, Sweden submitted an application to join NATO in May 2022, but its entry into the alliance is still facing opposition from Turkey and Hungary.
