On Sunday, April 16, the Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) nuclear reactor, which is the largest in Europe, began regular operation in Finland.
As “European Truth” writes, this was reported in the operating company Teollisuuden Voima Oyj.
“The third power unit is now ready. The test phase has been completed and today, April 16, 2023, it started regular electricity generation. Now 30% of the electricity in Finland will come from the Olkiluoto NPP,” the company said in a statement on Twitter.
The new reactor is expected to operate for at least 60 years, the company said in a statement. It will produce electricity with a capacity of about 1,600 MW.
The third power unit of the Olkiluoto NPP was supposed to be put into commercial operation in 2010, but later the start-up dates were postponed to 2013, 2015 and 2018.
The power unit was built in cooperation with the French company Areva and the German Siemens.
We will remind, on the night of April 16, Germany shut down the last three nuclear power plants: “Isar-2” in Bavaria, “Emsland” in Lower Saxony and “Nekarvestheim-2” in Baden-Württemberg.
