Finland will help Estonia accept refugees from Ukraine

The Ministries of Internal Affairs of Estonia and Finland have agreed that Finland is ready to accept up to 100 Ukrainian refugees per week who have expressed their desire. This is reported by ERR.

Target group

The target group primarily includes citizens of Ukraine who do not yet have temporary protection or a valid residence permit in Estonia or another country. If they have a valid residence permit, they will first have to give it up and then apply for a new one in Finland.

The target group does not include persons who do not have the right to temporary protection and citizens of other third countries, unless they are family members of a Ukrainian refugee. The target group also does not include minors and people with special needs without an accompanying person, whose move to Finland would be too burdensome.

Of the refugees who arrived in Estonia, almost 66,000 people announced their intention to stay, and more than 42,000 applications for temporary protection were submitted.

“The number of new Ukrainian refugees arriving in Estonia tends to decrease. The number of newly arriving citizens of Ukraine in the last month mostly remains at the level of less than a hundred people per day,” the message says.

According to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Estonia, Laura Läänemets, support from Finland is needed first of all to avoid a situation where, with an increase in the number of refugees, the pressure on the ability of the Estonian state to provide the necessary assistance would increase significantly, because in this case, due to a drop in quality of supporting services provided, for example, in the health care or education system, both refugees and local residents would suffer.
