For the first time, the court stripped the Russian citizenship of migrants who did not enter the military register

The court in Chelyabinsk, for the first time in Russia, made a decision to terminate the Russian citizenship of two migrant brothers for evading military registration. Now they must leave Russia or be deported. This was reported in the press service of the main department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Chelyabinsk region.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs specified that the decision to revoke citizenship was made in relation to “two young people aged 21 and 24”. According to the department, when applying for a Russian passport, they provided false information in order to avoid military service.

When acquiring Russian citizenship, it is necessary to appear at the military enlistment office within 14 days to register for military registration.

The day before, the Moscow office of the Investigative Committee asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to keep the acquired Russian citizenship of seven people convicted of various crimes, including evasion of military service.

• In April 2023, President Vladimir Putin signed a law on revoking acquired citizenship for so-called fakes about the army and its “discrediting”. According to the new law, it will be possible to lose Russian citizenship not only for committing terrorist and extremist crimes, but also on the basis of the conclusion of the FSB that the actions of a citizen “create a threat to the national security” of Russia. It will be possible to appeal this decision within 10 days after the deprivation of citizenship. Those found guilty of evasion of military and alternative civil service, desertion, and participation in the activities of an “undesirable organization” may also lose their Russian passport.
