General of the Federal Security Service Gennady Lopyrev, who oversaw the construction of “Putin’s palace” in Gelendzhik, died at the age of 69 in the correctional colony No. 3 in the Ryazan region, the chairman of the Public Supervisory Commission for the region Viktor Boborykin said.

He did not name the cause of Lopyrev’s death, but asserts that “there is no crime.”

According to FSIN, Lopyrev’s death was related to some illness. However, according to The Moscow Times, the general did not complain about his health and was preparing for parole.

In 2017, Gennady Lopyrev was sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of receiving bribes in the amount of over six million rubles and illegal possession of weapons. It was reported that another billion rubles were found in his possession during the search.

Lopyrev was responsible for ensuring the security of state facilities in the south of the country and monitored the spending of funds allocated for the construction of a residence on the Black Sea coast in Gelendzhik. The residence, according to the investigation team of Alexei Navalny, was intended for the Russian president to rest.
