“Gazprom-media” forbade its mass media to publish content on YouTube

The general director of the Gazprom-Media holding, the former head of Roskomnadzor, Alexander Zharov, forbade mass media belonging to the holding to post content on the American video hosting YouTube. Telegram channel Baza, citing anonymous sources, claims that Zharov signed the corresponding order on February 1.
Indirect evidence of the effect of the ban is the fact that the YouTube accounts of the TV channels “Match TV” and “Pyatnitsa”, whose combined audience exceeds eight million people, have not been updated for a week. During this time, two videos were posted on the account of the TNT channel, but, according to “Baza”, this is due to a mistake made by SMM managers.
The media report also states that Zharov’s order is connected with the possible blocking of YouTube video hosting in Russia, which was recently announced by several Russian officials.
At the end of 2020, the Gazprom-media holding acquired one hundred percent of the shares of the Russian video hosting company Rutube. Alexander Zharov then announced work on its modernization with the goal of making the site “as convenient” as the American YouTube platform. At the same time, Roskomnadzor accused YouTube of censorship and appealed to leading Russian Internet companies to help create domestic video hosting sites “for internal use.”
- In October of last year, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a St. Petersburg businessman close to Vladimir Putin and the founder of the private military company “Wagner”, who is also considered the creator of the so-called “Internet troll factory”, appealed to the Prosecutor General’s Office with a request to ban YouTube and punish those who continue to use it. According to Prigozhin, “fakes about a special military operation are being spread on video hosting, Russophobic content is being published, and calls for the overthrow of the Russian government are being heard.” In addition, the businessman needed to recognize the activities of Google, which owns YouTube, as undesirable on the territory of Russia.
