Hetmantsev: the sale of counterfeit “coffee” made from maltodextrin is flourishing in Ukraine

The market of counterfeit coffee in Ukraine reaches 30%, and fakes of global brands of instant coffee are sold in the markets and on the Internet, although in fact this product has nothing to do with either the brands or coffee.

About this stated Danylo Hetmantsev, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy.

“Counterfeiting and counterfeiting of world and Ukrainian brands is flourishing, as well as the sale under brands in the markets and via the Internet of what cannot be called coffee, made from maltodextrin,” he said.

As Hetmantsev clarified, maltodextrin is a substance that is added to coffee instead of coffee when counterfeiting is made.

According to him, he received such information during a meeting with coffee producers.

“The situation on the market is both terrible and typical for our country. 30% of the market is in the shadows. Granulated coffee is imported at a customs value lower than green grain,” said the head of the finance committee.

He also hinted at the existence in Ukraine of “several families of “businessmen” who are the “roof” for this business.

“Business … asks for one thing – to fulfill the state’s duty to ensure the legal and transparent operation of the market. Both coffee consumers and the state itself, which collects money for the army, are interested in this. Several families of “businessmen” who set up super profitable business under foreign brands, without paying taxes and at the expense of our health,” Hetmantsev noted.
