The Moscow court fined the imprisoned politician Ilya Yashin 45,000 rubles for the lack of a “foreign agent” marking. This is reported by “Mediazona”.

Yashin attended the meeting via video link, and the picture on the screen was black and white.

The protocol was drawn up due to five posts in Yashin’s Telegram channel, published since November 2022, when the Ministry of Justice of Russia entered the opposition figure into the register of “foreign agents”. “What is characteristic is that almost all of them concern Putin,” wrote Yashin. The channel is not run by Yashin himself, but by his associates, the politician’s letters from the conclusion are published there.

Yashin and his defense consider the administrative protocol a reason for a criminal case against the politician. Lawyer Mikhail Biryukov noted in court that at the time of publication of the posts to which Roskomnadzor complained, Yashin was arrested and, according to the FSIN’s response, did not have access to social networks.

The lawyer also said that earlier Yashin disputed the status of a “foreign agent”, as he cannot be under foreign influence in prison. The politician did not receive an official response to his request.

The defense believes that Yashin is “actually held responsible for his beliefs” and asked the court to dismiss the case. Roskomnadzor representative Vladimir Solomonenko, in turn, said that Yashin distributed materials “with the help of third parties.”

Speaking via video link in court, Yashin said that “today’s verdict” is irrelevant, and the label of foreign agent, no matter how hard propaganda tries, will not stick to him. “It won’t work to intimidate and silence me anyway. And most importantly, no one will succeed in undermining my faith in Russia and its people,” said the opposition politician.

  • Ilya Yashin was arrested in July 2022 and sentenced to eight and a half years in a penal colony under the article about the so-called fakes about the Russian army.
  • Yashin was declared a “foreign agent” shortly after his arrest in the summer of 2022. According to the article of the Criminal Code “Evasion of the obligations stipulated by the legislation of the Russian Federation on foreign agents”, repeated violations of the obligations, including the lack of marking, may result in imprisonment for up to two years.
