Opposition politician Ilya Yashin, who is in a correctional facility on charges of spreading so-called fakes about the Russian army, was sent to a detention center for five days. As Yashin himself reported, the reason for the fine was his refusal to participate in the construction of new camp barracks.

“I explained my position to the commission: I have a positive attitude to work, I am ready to work, but I will not stand to build prisons and barracks in a country where the number of political prisoners is growing every day – this contradicts my beliefs. However, I do not demand privilege and ask that I be employed on an ordinary work in a camp industrial zone: for example, in a workshop for the production of reinforced concrete products or woodworking,” Yashin wrote in his Telegram channel.

After that, an act of refusal to work was drawn up on him and fined.

Yashin mentions that the disciplinary commission met a few hours after the court session, at which he was fined for refusing to mark his publications with the “innocent agent’s label”. Speaking in court, the politician called the requirement for “dissidents” to mark their statements “fascist practice” and said that he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of betraying the country’s interests. He writes that he expected such a development of events after his speech.

  • Ilya Yashin was arrested in July 2022 and sentenced to eight and a half years in a penal colony under the article about the so-called fakes about the Russian army. Shortly after his arrest, he was entered into the register of “foreign agents” by the Ministry of Justice of Russia.
  • Placement of opposition prisoners in SHIZO is widespread in Russian prisons and colonies. Yes, Alexey Navalny has already been placed in a detention center 23 times, and he is often sent there on the same day when the term of the previous sentence ends. Vladimir Kara-Murza has been in the SHIZO five times already. Reasons for fines are minor violations of the regime – for example, an unbuttoned shirt or being on a bed after the “get up” command.
