In 2022, Russian courts handed down the maximum number of sentences under the article on LGBT+ propaganda. This was reported by DOXA, which studied the reports of the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of Russia.
Last year, 16 people were sentenced for spreading positive information about LGBT+ in Russia: 14 physical, one legal and one official. This is more than twice the number of sentences for the previous hour.
The sum of all fines was almost 1.6 million rubles. One convict was expelled from Russia: such a punishment is provided for foreigners.
An article prohibiting positive talk about same-sex relationships appeared in Russian legislation in 2013. Then it concerned only the dissemination of information among minors.
From December 2022, the distribution of positive information about homosexuality, bisexuality and transgenderism in general is prohibited in Russia. Fines of up to 400,000 rubles for citizens and up to five million rubles for organizations are provided for this.
After the adoption of the new law, bookstores and marketplaces remove books about homosexual love from sale, video services censor TV series, and the police look for transgender sex workers and bring them to court. The courts, in turn, initiate cases, impose fines, and deport the convicted from Russia.
