By the end of 2023, the number of Russians living below the poverty line was 13.5 million. “Kommersant” writes about this with reference to Rosstat data, which include the annexed Crimea and Sevastopol.
In an hour, the number of poor people decreased by 800 thousand people or by 0.5 percentage points – to 9.3% of the total population. “Kommersant” writes that this is a historical minimum. In 2023, Rosstat accepted 14.3 thousand rubles per person per month as the poverty line.
Experts polled by the newspaper explain the decrease in poverty by the growth of incomes: wages in the face of a shortage of personnel and payments to families with children. Also among the reasons is the growth of Russian GDP by 3.6% in the context of the war with Ukraine.
Earlier, the Finnish Institute for the Study of Developing Economies BOFIT noticed that in 2023 the amount of funds in the bank accounts of Russians from the poorest regions increased sharply. Analysts explained this by payments to contractors and mobilized, as well as “grave” payments.
- Rosstat estimates the number of people with monetary incomes below the established poverty line since 1992. In 2021, the method of calculating the poverty line was changed. Now it corresponds to the value of the consumer basket in the IV quarter of 2020, adjusted for inflation.
