In the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, two protesters burned the Koran – the holy book of Muslims – in front of the Iraqi embassy. Both of them belong to the ultra-nationalist group “Danish Patriots”. It is not known whether the activists made any demands to the Iraqi authorities.
This is already the second such action by “Danish Patriots” in a week. Last Thursday, a group of activists also burned the Koran and trampled the Iraqi flag in front of the embassy building. Then the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Lars Locke, called the burning of the Koran “stupidity and blasphemy” and condemned the nationalists, but noted that the burning of religious literature in itself is not a crime under Danish law.
The incident on Thursday sparked mass protests in Baghdad, where about a thousand people gathered at the Danish embassy, chanting religious slogans. In the city of Basra, protesters set fire to the building of the Danish humanitarian mission for refugees. The President of Iraq, Abdel Latif Rashid, made a statement and called on international organizations and governments of Western countries to “stop provocations and incitement of hatred, regardless of the reasons.”
