In Germany, a universal monthly pass for 49 euros will be introduced

The German government has approved the introduction this spring of a monthly pass costing €49.

According to the approved draft law, the ticket will come into effect on May 1 and will be available in the form of a monthly travel pass.

As agreed with the German regions a week earlier, the ticket will be valid for most types of public transport, except for long-distance trains and long-distance buses.

“We now want to start the legislative process as soon as possible,” Transport Minister Volker Wissing said in a video message on social media.

In addition to the German parliament and the Bundesrat, the upper house of parliament, the draft law must also be approved by the European Commission.

The implementation of the ticket will be entrusted to the regions of Germany. The successor to the popular €9 ticket introduced last summer was initially expected to be rolled out sooner.

But for several months, the federal and regional governments argued over the organization and funding. The compromise adopted now provides that Berlin will provide the regions with 1.5 billion euros per year until 2025, as well as additional regional funds. The regions, in turn, will also contribute 1.5 billion euros.

However, higher costs are expected to implement the scheme, which the federal and regional governments want to share in the first year and assess in subsequent years.

A new discount ticket will replace it the so-called “ticket for 9 euros”, with which both German residents and tourists could use public transport at a discounted rate in the summer. The cheap travel program cost the German government more than 2.5 billion euros.

In the first days of operation of the universal travel card in Germany overcrowded regional trains were reported in many directions.
