In London, the part of the street near the Russian embassy was named Kyiv Road (Киевская улица). This is stated in the message of the council of the London district of Westminster.
The renaming of a 25-meter section of road in the Soviet Union was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As noted in the statement of the council, this was done at the request of representatives of the Ukrainian community of Westminster.
“This is only a small section of the road, but we want to show the people of Ukraine that in our city they do not forget about the struggle they are waging. Toponyms throughout London have been changing for many decades to mark important moments in history or the role of certain figures, so that Kyiv Road is part of this ancient tradition,” said the head of the council, Adam Hag.
One of the council members, Paul Diemoldenberg, said in an interview with the BBC that the renaming should be “a signal to Putin and the people of Russia that we stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ukraine.”
