In Primorye, the first verdict on tiger fakes was handed down

The court in the Primorsky Krai issued the first ruling in the case of fakes about the Amur tigers. The accused was fined 50,000 rubles and his phone was confiscated. This was reported by the Amur Tiger Center.

According to the case file, in January 2023, a local resident informed the police that there might be a tiger in the village where she lives. She showed a photo published by an “eyewitness”.

The policemen who arrived in the village did not find any traces of either the tiger or the elk. They established that the photo of the tiger was distributed by a 30-year-old local resident: he downloaded the picture from the Internet and published it in Telegram and WhatsApp.

The court accused him of spreading fakes, which created a threat of violation of public order.

• The Amur tiger is listed in the Red Book of Russia. Hunting for it is prohibited under the threat of punishment in the form of four years of imprisonment with a fine of one million rubles.
• In the 1930s, poachers destroyed almost all Amur tigers. After the ban on hunting, the number of tigers began to grow, but the population is also affected by the unlimited hunting of ungulates – the main diet of the Amur tiger, and deforestation.
• The length of Amur tigers reaches 2.2 meters in length, weight – 185 kilograms, and paws – 16 centimeters in diameter.
