In Russia, the domain names of websites that contain information that looks like the election campaign of the founder of PMC “Wagner” Evgeny Prigozhin have been blocked. “Roskomsvoboda”, which monitors blocks in Runet, drew attention to this.
As noted in the organization, the blockades began on June 28. Restrictions were introduced in relation to seven sites – all of them are blocked by “mask”, that is, with all domains and subdomains. It is not specified which state body makes the decision to restrict access to the sites.
The domain names of the blocked sites include the combination p2024 or pp2024, and they themselves contained a photo of Yevgeny Prigozhin and the slogan “Shoot on target. Work honestly.” In the texts posted on these sites, it is said that Russia is a “great” and “unique” country, and Prigozhin himself is characterized as a man who “wouldn’t sell Russia for European castles and American bank accounts.” Site visitors are also urged to support Prigozhin – “the new leader of the new Russia” “to save” the country.
Who exactly created sites similar to the pre-election campaign of the founder of PMC “Wagner” is unknown. There is no confirmation that the blocked sites are really connected to Prigozhin.
- Sites in support of Yevgeny Prigozhin were blocked after PMC founder Wagner, on June 23, raised a rebellion against, as he claimed, the military leadership of Russia. Mercenaries of the PMC occupied Rostov-on-Don, and also drove a column in the direction of Moscow through several regions of Russia. During the mutiny, the Wagnerites shot down several helicopters and a plane of the Russian army. Several pilots died.
- The armed demonstration of the PMC “Wagner” ended with the agreement to close the criminal case on the fact of the rebellion and that Yevgeny Prigozhin and willing mercenaries of the PMC will go to Belarus. Many details related to the rebellion are still unclear.
- Presidential elections in Russia are scheduled for March 17, 2024. Yevgeny Prigozhin did not announce his intention to run for the post of head of state.
