The court in St. Petersburg registered the materials of the criminal case against the 76-year-old physicist Alexander Kuranov on the article of state embezzlement. Mediazona drew attention to the documents. Kuranov was arrested in August 2021.
In August 2021, FSB officers detained the chief designer of OJSC “Nauchno-Issledovskoe Predpriyatiya Hyperzvkovych Systems”, Professor of the Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Alexander Kuranov, on suspicion of high treason. The court in Moscow sent the scientist to the SIZO. Then the measure of suppression of the physicist was repeatedly extended.
Citing an informed source, “Interfax” wrote that Kuranov “gave a foreign citizen classified information about these scientific developments.” Another source added that Kuranov, in particular, participated in the development of the Ajax hypersonic aircraft. As part of this project, he interacted with scientists from the USA and China. As “Novaya Gazeta” noted, in the last 15 years before the arrest, all the inventions patented by Kuranov and his co-authors concerned developments within the framework of “Ajax”.

- By February 2024, at least 12 scientists who were studying physical processes at hypersonic speeds were arrested in Russia. All of them were accused of treason.
