In Syria, the funerals of dozens of those killed in a drone attack were held

In Syria, on Friday, the funerals of dozens of people who died as a result of a drone attack on the military academy in the city of Homs during the awarding of diplomas were held. Three days of mourning have been declared in the country.

Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas also attended the graduation ceremony, but left it a few minutes before the attack.

No one took responsibility for the attack. The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country blamed the incident on “terrorist groups”, without specifying any details.

Earlier, the Syrian Ministry of Health reported that 89 people, including 31 women and five children, died as a result of the attack. According to the UK-based Syrian Human Rights Monitoring Center, more than 100 people were killed and more than 125 people were injured.

According to the Reuters agency, throughout the night and morning of Friday, the Syrian government forces conducted artillery fire on the territory controlled by the rebels in the northern provinces of Idlib and Aleppo. It is reported that at least 12 civilians died as a result of this shelling.

The drone attack was an unprecedented case of using drones against government forces in a war that began with protests against President Bashar al-Assad in 2011 and escalated into a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands of people. Russia intervened in the conflict on Assad’s side. Recently, there have been no active hostilities with the participation of the Russian military, however, there is still a Russian contingent in the country, including aviation.
